The Knox County Mayor’s office is proud to introduce Leaders for Readers: a new volunteer program to help selected first, second and third grade students improve their reading skills. Leaders for Readers is supported by Knox County Schools’ Superintendent and operated by Great Schools Partnership.
This initiative aims to increase the number of children reading at grade level by pairing volunteers with individual students who just need a little nudge.
One-on-one attention provides selected students the important opportunity to practice their already existing reading skills. This level of support can achieve as much as a 30 percent increase in the number of students who read at grade level.
In first through third grade, a student’s main focus is learning to read. It isn’t until fourth grade that the focus shifts to reading to learn. If a child is not reading on grade level by third grade, they may struggle for the duration of their school career.
As a volunteer, you can have a direct and significant impact on a child’s life. If you are able to make a one hour per week commitment for the entire school year to help students read, we encourage you join.
