In comparison to middle class students, children from economically distressed homes enter school with dramatically less exposure to vocabulary and limited context to give words relevance. This gap leaves low income students significantly behind their peers in reading proficiency.
In conjunction with Knox County Schools, Great Schools Partnership piloted the Arts Integrated Tutoring program at Beaumont Magnet Academy Community School during the 2017-2018 school year with fantastic results. This evidence based elementary school tutoring model utilizes music, art and movement to increase student’s reading and language comprehension.
Because of the program’s success, it was expanded in the 2018-2019 school year to a number of elementary community schools and is receiving high reviews from students, parents, teachers and principals. Arts Integrated Tutoring continues to be in the research and development stage with Great Schools. Additional outcomes driven data will be available in the fall of 2019.
