Each year, Comcast Cares Day is one of the largest corporate commitments to volunteerism and service in America. Comcast NBCUniversal’s long-standing company tradition has engaged more than one million volunteers to help strengthen communities around the world where their customers and employees live and work.
Green Magnet Community School in downtown/east Knoxville was the recipient of Comcast’s volunteerism this year. Green was selected as a beautification site, with the aim of engaging volunteers in their community and bringing out the natural beauty of the school grounds.
On May 4, 2019 Green Community School convened more than 200 volunteers to their school location. Comcast volunteers worked tirelessly to beautify the school. Volunteers pressure washed, planted flowers, weeded, mulched, cleaned the greenhouse, organized closet space, painted, and revitalized the bathrooms.
While a lot of preparation went into this project, the work was well worth it according to staff. Community School Site Resource Coordinator, Olivier Muhire, stated, “It was so great to see everyone come together and I keep hearing about how great the school looks now. Thank you, Comcast, for all your hard work!”
Adults across Knox County are volunteering at our community schools in a variety of capacities, including mentoring students, assisting with school clubs, and reading with students in our Leaders for Readers program.
