We are proud to announce the kick off of our Community School dental program! Students at Green Magnet Academy are the first in Knox County to have received dental screenings on-site at school, at no cost to families. This is another example of how Community Schools help remove barriers to learning and encourage good health practices among youth.
On Tuesday, March 31, students at Green bounced with excitement as they waited in line for staff from Western Heights Dental to start their screenings. It was heart-warming to see youth excited about clean teeth.
Students who are recommended for further treatment will participate in a field trip to Western Heights Dental during the school day to receive follow up dental services.
Elgin Children’s Foundation is supporting the dental program, in partnership with Knox County Schools, the Knox County Mayor’s Office, the Knox County Health Department, and Great Schools Partnership.
Plans to expand this pilot program to other Community School sites are underway. In the coming months, each site will select a dental partner to provide screening and treatment for students. The program includes a process for dental practices to be reimbursed for eligible procedures.
Elgin Children’s Foundation supports dental programs in 15 other school districts in Tennessee, Virginia and Kentucky. The Knox County Health Department will also provide dental services to students participating in the program.
