Great Schools Partnership’s Parents as Teachers program has earned the Parents as Teachers National Center’s prestigious endorsement as a Blue-Ribbon Affiliate. This endorsement makes the Knox County affiliate one of the top-performing home visiting affiliates within the international Parents as Teachers network. Great Schools’ Parents as Teachers affiliate met or exceeded 100 percent of the quality standards.
“Parents are a child’s first teacher and their home is their first classroom,” said Yvette Parker, field supervisor of Parents as Teachers Knox County affiliate. “Parents as Teachers has 100 quality standards and we met or exceeded them all. This blue-ribbon award represents the quality service and outstanding outcomes that our program has to offer to the community. We are strengthening families, strengthening communities and strengthening a nation through home visitation.”
Knox County’s Parents as Teacher program has been preparing preschoolers for school by empowering, supporting and encouraging parents to be their child’s first and most influential teacher since the program started in 2000. Last school year, Parents as Teachers parent educators made more than 1,800 home visits, helping more than 200 Knox County families and 250 preschool children.
In the National Center’s Quality Endorsement Final Report, Great Schools’ Parents as Teachers program was recognized for its many strengths. “This Parents as Teachers affiliate has a well-developed infrastructure, employs capable and dedicated staff, and provides valuable services to families…. The Knox County community is truly enriched by this Parents as Teachers affiliate,” the report states.
Through the program, Parents as Teachers’ parent educators meet families where they are comfortable, typically in their home. During visits, parent educators assess family needs and partner with parents to set family goals to support the emotional, behavioral and physical development of their children.
Great Schools’ Parents as Teachers program is one of only three home visitation programs in the state that is federally recognized for its proven impact. Great Schools’ Parents as Teachers program received its Blue-Ribbon designation at the end of 2018. The designation is valid for five years.
