Lonsdale Community School was selected to win the Latino Humanitarian Award at Centro Hispano’s upcoming Latino Awards!
Centro Hispano de East Tennessee’s Latino Awards Gala highlights the achievements of our Hispanic community and recognizes community leaders who have provided extraordinary support for East Tennessee’s Hispanic population. The recipients of these awards are individuals or organizations whose substantial work and dedication make a positive impact in Knoxville.
Latino Humanitarian Award Goes To Lonsdale Community School
This is an award for either an individual (Latino, or non-latino) or an organization (nonprofit or for profit) that has gone above and beyond, possibly in the face of personal risk, to help in a specific situation. The Lonsdale Community Schools initiative serves Lonsdale Elementary, whose student body is over 60% Latino. Many of these students are of Guatemalan descent and speak Mayan languages at home, learning Spanish as a second language, and English as a third. The Lonsdale community is low-income and extremely ethnically diverse. Lonsdale’s Community School initiative has chosen to make this diversity a strength to be celebrated. The Lonsdale Community School Resource Coordinator from Great Schools Partnership works tirelessly to deliver services and provide resources to children and families in Lonsdale. Adult and child ESL classes, health screenings, clinics, transportation to the dentist, and many after school enrichment activities are put on by Lonsdale Community School. They were also one of the first area organizations to host an Emergency Planning event to help families put a plan in place for childcare if a parent is detained or deported. The welcoming feeling created by the staff, partners, and community at Lonsdale Community School creates a warm environment in which all children can excel and realize their potential, and where families from all backgrounds can feel embraced and included.
The awards will be presented at The Latino Awards Gala, held at The Mill & Mine on Saturday, August 26 th at 6:00pm.
