Shakespeare in Shades is an innovative arts integration program using theatre to help build reading proficiency for rising middle school students attending Northwest Middle and Vine Magnet Middle Schools. In collaboration with the University of Tennessee’s Clarence Brown Theatre (CBT) and Knox County Schools, this program aims to help ease the transition of Community School students from elementary into middle school by boosting reading proficiency, building confidence, leadership skills, and increasing creative expression and classroom participation, using theatre as the vehicle to do so. Teams of UT theatre students work with Knox County Schools teachers to help students put on a production of an adapted middle school novel for a final showcase production for friends and family at CBT’s Carousel Theatre.
Spring Session for 5th Grade
Offered to fifth graders at Beaumont Magnet, Christenberry, Green Magnet, Lonsdale, Norwood, and Sarah Moore Greene Magnet, this after-school drama club meets once a week for about 12 weeks during their spring semester, where students are introduced to the basics of theatre. Students will learn theatre games and exercises to help introduce them to the basics of being on stage.
Summer Session for Rising 6th Graders
Rising sixth graders attending Northwest Middle and Vine Magnet Middle will meet Monday through Friday during the month of June to work on their reading and writing skills, while staging an adapted middle school novel.
Selected students who have previously participated in the previous summer program will be invited back as rising seventh graders to help serve as “Jr. Theatre Assistants” to help with production elements, such as stage managing, set, costumes, sound, and props designing.
The final week will take place at the Clarence Brown Theatre (CBT) as students prepare a final showcase for their friends and family.
Final Showcase will be held the the end of June. A dinner reception for students and their invited guests will be followed by the show with the evening’s events concluding around 8:30 p.m. Limited bus transportation and lunch will be provided at each site throughout the program. This program is free of charge.
Applications will be due in the spring. Please check back for updated applications.
Fall Book Club for 6th Grade
A fall Book Club will be offered to the sixth and seventh grade students at both Northwest Middle and Vine Magnet Middle during the fall semester. This will provide an opportunity for students to keep connected with their UT theatre mentors and provide an additional opportunity to continue fostering students’ love of reading.
